Hemorrhage Control: Extremity & Junctional Bleeds

Program Goals

  • To introduce and develop essential skills for controlling both extremity and junctional hemorrhage in high-risk trauma scenarios.

  • To fulfill a portion of the 30-hour emergency training requirement for EMTs entering 911 response roles at Lifeline.

  • To provide foundational, hands-on training aligned with TECC/TCCC standards to prepare EMTs for real-world trauma situations.

Program Objectives

At the conclusion of this training session, each participant shall be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of hemorrhage control in prehospital trauma care, including time sensitivity and associated risks.

  2. Describe key anatomical vascular structures using cadaver-based visuals.

  3. Apply evidence-based TECC/TCCC-aligned protocols for extremity and junctional hemorrhage control.

  4. Accurately identify bleeding sources and pressure points for effective wound packing.

  5. Demonstrate the proper use of tourniquets.

  6. Analyze real trauma case footage to enhance critical thinking and field decision-making.

  7. Accurately document hemorrhage control interventions in alignment with agency standards.

Target Audience

EMTs preparing to enter or currently working in a 911 response system.

Program Length:
2 hours

  • 1 hour: Video-assisted didactic (includes cadaver lab visuals and real bodycam trauma footage)

  • 1 hour: Hands-on practical skills training

Continuing Education Credit:
2 hours of approved California EMS Continuing Education.

Evaluation of Learning

  • Participants will complete a hands-on skills validation session demonstrating proficiency in:

    • Hemostatic agent application

    • Wound packing with correct pressure point use

    • Standard and junctional tourniquet deployment

    • Proper documentation of hemorrhage control techniques
